Vila Galé revenues increased 6% to 184 million Euros in 2018

The 32 Vila Galé hotels achieved a turnover of 184 million Euros in 2018, up 6% than in 2017.

In Portugal, where the group owns 23 hotels, the revenues were up to 112 million Euros, which compares to the 106 million reached in the previous year. Last year, the occupancy was of 977 thousand rooms in the national market, in line with 2017.

It is worth reminding that, in April and May, Vila Galé opened two hotels in Portugal: the Vila Galé Sintra hotel, with a health and wellness concept, and Vila Galé Collection Braga, respectively. Excluding the impact of these two units, revenues in Portugal were 107 million Euros, with an occupancy of more than 932 thousand rooms.

In 2018, the Portuguese remained the main guests staying in Vila Galé hotels in Portugal, representing around 30%. The German, British, Spanish and French markets then followed. However, the growth in demand by Americans and Brazilians, who topped the greatest increases in the number of nights, should be highlighted.

Regarding the units in Brazil, revenues totaled 318 million Brazilian Reais, a 20% increase when compared to the 265 million Reais recorded in 2017.

In that country, Vila Galé has three city hotels (Rio de Janeiro, Salvador and Fortaleza) and five resorts: Marés, Ecoresort do Cabo, Ecoresort de Angra, Cumbuco and, opened this year, in September, Vila Galé Touros and, in December, Vila Galé Costa dos Ventos Suites. Considering an exchange rate of €1 = R$4.4, the operation in Brazil generated 72 million Euros, also reflecting some exchange rate effect, as in the previous year there was an exchange rate of €1 = R$3.9.

In total, 535 thousand occupied rooms were recorded, 8% more than in 2017.

When analyzing the same number of hotels, i.e discounting the turnover of these two new units, revenues amounted to 302 million Reais and the occupancy was over 516 thousand rooms.

Throughout 2018, Vila Galé created 100 jobs in Portugal and 400 jobs in Brazil.

During this period, the group also invested around 1.5 million Euros in refurbishments and new concepts in Portugal, namely the opening of two Massa Fina pizzerias (in Vilamoura and Lagos), the launch of the Vila Galé Café concept and the renovation of rooms in Vila Galé Ampalius (Vilamoura).

The expansions and refurbishments in Brazilian units deserved an investment of almost 20 million Reais. Here, the increase in the number of rooms in the Vila Galé Marés and Vila Galé Cumbuco resorts is of note, as each unit now has more than 500 rooms.

In addition to the four openings and renovations carried out in 2018, the year was also marked by the 30th anniversary of the first Vila Galé hotel’s opening, Vila Galé Atlântico, set on the Galé Beach. The event was celebrated with a campaign where the group offered 30 prizes per month (vacation weeks, vouchers for stays and for gastronomic experiences or Nep children’s birthday parties) as of May, with a total of 240. And there were around 20 thousand participations in the campaign.
